Coconut Oil Beauty Hack

Let’s be honest here. Chances are by now you’ve heard of the do-it-yourself beauty treatments AKA beauty hacks. I’m sure you have all seen the infamous Pinterest fails too! While I am usually skeptical of diy projects I had to try the coconut oil hair mask. My poor hair is in desperate need of some L-O-V-E. It’s oily at the roots & dry at the ends. To top it off I deal with crazy waves. I know you’re supposed to love your natural hair, but who doesn’t want to tame their mane?

Helpful Tip – I highly recommend wearing an old shirt or an article of clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty.

*Don’t be alarmed at my before photo.*

beauty hack before

I told you it was all over the place!

Coconut oil hair mask

This is the coconut oil I used. I found it at my local grocery store. You do not need to heat it up beforehand. The heat from your hands will help the coconut oil melt while you are applying it to your hair. Now I decided to put my hair in a ponytail and only applied the coconut oil to the length of my hair. Afterwards my hair was placed in a bun so I could keep everything in place.

how to apply coconut oil hair mask

coconut oil beauty hack

Once my hair was full of coconut oil goodness I decided to apply heat via my handy dandy blow dryer! Some people sleep with these masks or leave them alone, but I do not have the patience for either of those methods. The purpose of the heat was to allow the hair follicles to open up so the coconut oil could go to work!!! I used the low heat setting for ten minutes. After that I left the mask on for 50 more minutes. In total I left my mask on for  one hour.

Now it was time for me to rinse. It’s a simple process. This was all I did:

*Rinse coconut oil from hair

*Shampoo

*Condition

*Partial air dry/partial blow dry

I decided than when I washed my hair that I wanted to give it a little boost. I used the Keratin Smooth line from TRESemme` that I am a huge fan of.

Here is what the end result looked like. Drumroll puh-lease……..

Doesn’t that look amazing? I know I still have split/dead ends that I need to cut off, but I am so happy with the end result.

What a difference! I am so thrilled to share this with all of you.

Have you tried this beauty hack before? What others have worked for you?

Etude House Dr. Ampoule Dual Mask Sheet Review

etude house dsm stock photo

Hello fellow SanSeoulites! Recently I decided that I wanted to try out a the Dr. Ampoule Dual Mask Sheet from Etude House. I figured it would end in one of two ways. #1 I would absolutely love it or #2 my poor face would be a soaking wet mess. Let’s just say I hoped for option one. They come in five different varieties: brightening, time, lifting, vital, and essential. After looking at this photo I kind of feel like I need them all.

I decided to try out Time mostly because I wanted to help “fight aging”. I know there is no stopping it, but there is no reason I can’t do it gracefully. 😉

My Experience:

eh sm4

etude housedr ampoule time sheet mask

In the photo you can see that the mask is labeled 1 and 2.  You simply open section one first, apply to your face, & then open section two and put the mask on. I recommend tearing off section one first for easy application. The back of these masks do have directions in English, however, it is very small to read. Just look for them at the bottom below the bar code.

etude house dr. ampoule

Silly me forgot to take a photo of how the serum looked so you will just have to take my word for it. When I opened it I discovered a clearish white gel that had a very thick consistency to it. I was doubtful this mask would even work at this point.

dr ampoule time dual sheet mask

The mask itself seemed like any other sheet mask from Etude House. It contained a lot of essence so of course I decided to use the extra for my neck and hands. I love the fit of these mask mostly because they are the right size for my face. (Yes, I  am pint size).

I decided to leave the Dr. Ampoule Dual Mask Sheet on for roughly 30 minutes, but when I removed it I realized that my face felt like it was still soaked. I attempted to remain optimistic and patted my face to absorb the rest of the liquid. Even then it was still very wet so I decided to see how long it would take to air dry. After ten minutes everything had absorbed into my skin. I WAS ECSTATIC! The mask worked and did not leave any sort of film. I was very afraid that I was going to have to simply wash everything off afterwards.

My overall thoughts:

I liked this mask and in the future I would like to try out the other varieties so I will definitely repurchase. My cons would be the texture and the heaviness of the product.  If the texture is something that would bother you then I would not recommend this mask series. I don’t mind how long it took since that is usually the amount of time I leave sheet mask on anyway. I would give this mask 3.5 out of 5.

Until next time my dears,

Honest Skin Beauty Haul

Honest Skin logo

As I procrastinated writing my next mask review I received a letter that a package was waiting for me via the post office across town. *sigh* This poor box came from Korea and sat in my town for a few days before it was mistakenly sent back overseas. This meant it had to be delivered a second time and now it was at the wrong post office. After driving across town I discovered that they did not have my package, but someone used one of their trucks. This pretty much summed up my feelings.

kanye mad face

Yes, I was having a total Kanye moment.

Eventually I made it to my original post office and my package was finally safe! For those who are not familiar with Honest Skin let me give you a quick summary.

Once Upon a Time there was a company that sold Korean skincare and make up at LOW LOW prices. Then one day they magically raised prices while offering free shipping. The princess being the savvy shopper that she is said “I don’t think so!” and proceeded to take her business elsewhere. The end.

I was actually very fond of Honest Skin before the price changes. Now I will only buy from them is I cannot find a better deal on an item. At least then their free shipping will be beneficial. Now one thing I do like is how they mark their packages. I have a lot of international friends who have dealt with the nightmare that is customs and VATs.

honest skin custom form

Everything was marked for a very low price. My package arrived in good condition, but at that point I had forgotten what I ordered in the first place! Opening the box didn’t really help me either.

See this is bubble wrap city, but in my opinion that is how all my items usually arrive safely. Now behold the glory of my Honest Skin haul.

Yay, look at all the pretties! I was a bit sad that I only received two samples this time, but companies don’t have to provide them at all so I will take it. Here’s a closer look of all the goodies. *All stock photos courtesy of Honest Skin.

#OOTD April 2015

Although I am usually the type of person who is a bit camera-shy I could not resist sharing one of my favorite looks with you all. My online community of friends have always been super supportive of all my endeavors. *mouths – “thank you”* Spring is such a beautiful time of year. Everything is new again and of course there is the dreaded spring cleaning, but it must be done. I typically store my wardrobe according to the seasons so unpacking clothes that I have not seen in a long time makes them feel new again.

So without further adieu….enjoy!

K-drama 101

The world of k-dramas can be daunting for beginners. What do you watch? How has everyone seen the same ones? The lead actor looks strangely similar to my bias. Welcome to dramaland. You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.

Let’s start with the basics. You will often hear the term Hallyu which stands for the Korean cultural wave. Many dramas only consist of a single season which is usually around 20 or so episodes. Part of the reason these dramas are so popular are because they are so short. Many Korean dramas have several titles for the same shows, but this is mostly because of translation within different countries.

K-DRAMAPOST2

Top left to right: Emergency Couple and My Love From Another Star

Bottom left to right: Heirs and Birth of a Beauty

Where to watch:

DramaFever is a free mobile app, but they also offer a subscription that allows you to use a device like Apple TV to stream directly to your television. You can even choose what language you would like for subtitles.

Netflix and Hulu Plus are both subscription services that many people already have. Hulu Plus even has a genre just for Korean dramas!

Soompi also offers free shows or premium service.

There are more sites, but I listed these because they are legal & will be virus free.

While some dramas may be deemed cheesy or just plain bad it seems like everyone has seen certain ones. So let’s give into peer pressure and join in!

My Beauty Diary Black Pearl Mask Review

Hello my dear SanSeoulites! This is the first post of a series I like to call Mask Mondays. Today I will be reviewing the Black Pearl sheet mask from My Beauty Diary. They are a very popular brand from Taiwan. I have included a chart below that contains most of the different varieties that they offer. I am a visual type of person so a photo like this allows me to quickly scan and pinpoint my skin needs.

Walmart is a great choice if you live in the United States. They are $13.75 for a box of 10 and shipping is on the cheaper side.

Minnano Japanese Grocery is my local choice. They only sell individual masks, but that is a plus if you want to try out different varieties. You can read about my experience here. Current prices: 1 x $1.60 or 3 x $3.99.

***Disclaimer – I received no compensation for this review and the links are only provided as a way to help you find the product.***

My experience:

When I found this mask I was surprised by how small the packaging was compared to other companies. A part of me thought I had just bought the dreaded knock-off version. Once I consulted with the beauty community they put my fears to rest. While I purchased a few different kinds I could not wait to try the Black Pearl!

MBD1

I hadn’t even opened the package yet and I was already in love.

Once opened I discovered that this was a cotton sheet and you peeled the mask off of the plastic backing.

MBD2

To my surprise this packet contains a lot of essence…I mean A LOT!!! I hade a soaking wet mask and enough to save for later. I will probably buy a few cotton masks to soak in the remaining essence. I know a lot of people leave these masks on until they dry or go to sleep while wearing them, but I decided to play it safe for my first time so I only left it on for 25 minutes.

This mask was waaaaay too big for my face, but I made it work! The scent was not strong and I had no adverse reactions. After I removed the mask I patted the remaining essence onto my skin and neck. My immediate impression was that my skin seemed brighter, although that was a temporary effect. I wish I had time to use something like this is the morning to give myself a bright and dewy look.

My overall thoughts:

I liked this mask and now that I know how to use it I will try out a few more of these. I will definitely repurchase in the future. It’s way too easy to run down to Minnano to pick up a few. If I had to rate this I would give it a 4 out of 5. The fit of the mask was the only con I had. With that being said I only have one other question.

What’s your favorite mask from My Beauty Diary?

ABOUT ME

about me

Hello dears!

My name is Scarlet, but close friends call me Scar or Scarlita bonita. LOL

I recently graduated with a BA in business administration/marketing from the University of the Incarnate Word. During school I first pursued a degree in fashion merchandising, but then realized that I was better suited towards business.

While skincare/make up is my main focus; I do have other interests. My family is always number one, but I also enjoy my k-drama, k-pop, anime, video games, food (OK… I really like that one), & giving advice. That last one has to be because of the mother hen in me.

Why SanSeoul?

I wanted something that reflected my passions & interests. I combined the name of my home (San Antonio) with Seoul (South Korea) to form SanSeoul. My readers are lovingly referred to as SanSeoulites.

I love searching both locally & internationally for unique & affordable skin care and make up. I have even started shopping for individuals who are interested in Asian skin care. I honestly love helping people discover their best skin. If you have any questions about products or skin concerns feel free to comment or send me a message at sanantonioseoulATgmailDOTcom.

Skin type: combination or oily.
Eye color: They change, but usually either green or hazel.
Hair color: Dirty blonde/brown
Hair length: Long
Hair type: Very wavy.

Favourite make up brands: Etude House, Tarte, & Ulta
General fashion style: Classic casual (I want to wear clothes longer than a single season).

Local Treasures

Today I decided to brave the rain & go check out Minnano Japanese Grocery. (Click on the link to find their Facebook page). I honestly went in search of sheet mask(s). I have heard that My Beauty Diary is a great brand so I picked up a few for myself & a friend to try out. I think I will debut these on my Mask Mondays so stay tuned!

The store itself was small so I don’t think I would consider it a grocery store. It seems almost like a tourist hotspot. Minnano was stocked to the brim with merchandise, very clean, & all of the staff were super friendly. I even found myself bowing back out of habit. lol Maybe I have watched one too many k-dramas. It seems to be divided up into a few sections consisting mainly of fresh food (meat mostly), snacks, drinks, oils, cookwear, beauty, & small otaku style collectibles & gifts. I walked out with a bag of cute snacks so hopefully they taste as amazing as they look!

Bottom row: Red Wine, Caviar, & Strawberry Yogurt.

These were on sale for 1 x $1.60 or 3 x $3.99. If anyone has tried this brand out please let me know!

If I had to rate this place I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. I honestly wish it was bigger! I was hoping to stock up on some cooking essentials, but I think I will have to check out some other markets in town. As for the sheet masks I am hoping that I have found my new favorite local shop to splurge at!
